Can You Visit the Rocky Mountains from Denver Without a Car?
Updated: Sep 26
You can spend a day in Colorado’s mountains and sleep in your Denver hotel that night without renting a car. The key is choosing a journey that reaches the place you want to explore. A train to Winter Park, a national-park sightseeing tour and a Pikes Peak outing are three different experiences.
Write the destination as precisely as you can: Rocky Mountain National Park, Winter Park or Pikes Peak. Then check whether the transportation reaches the attraction itself, a nearby town or a station that still requires another connection.
For Rocky Mountain National Park, compare complete tour itineraries
A guided day trip can combine travel from Denver with sightseeing inside the park and the return journey. That is useful when you want to see several places during one day without arranging separate connections.
iLimo’s Rocky Mountain National Park tour follows a seasonal sightseeing route. Read the current stop list and departure instructions before booking. Reaching the shared-tour meeting point in Denver remains part of your own travel plan.
Choose a dedicated hiking arrangement if a particular trail is your main goal. A sightseeing tour’s stops do not give you unlimited time to leave the group and complete a longer hike.
There are trains into the mountains, but check the destination
Amtrak’s Winter Park Express is a seasonal rail service between Denver Union Station and Winter Park. Check Amtrak’s published operating dates for your trip; do not assume the service runs every day or throughout the year.
Winter Park is not Rocky Mountain National Park. A ticket to one should not be booked as though it delivers you to the other. When comparing a rail trip with a national-park tour, compare the destination and the time available there as well as the fare.
The Pikes Peak Cog Railway starts in Manitou Springs
The Cog Railway is a mountain attraction with its departure station in Manitou Springs. It does not collect you in Denver. If you want to ride it, arrange transportation to the station, the train booking and a reliable return journey.
iLimo’s Pikes Peak tour from Denver offers a different plan: transportation from Denver, Garden of the Gods, Manitou Springs and a drive on Pikes Peak Highway as conditions allow. A railway ticket is not included in that highway itinerary.

Check the last part of the journey
Follow the journey all the way through: hotel to departure point, main transport, arrival point to the attraction, and the return. At each change, ask where you will be waiting and what you will carry. A cheap outward ticket is useful only when the remaining connections also work.
Confirm the return before committing to an outward journey. Leave room for a delayed arrival, the walk to your meeting point and any luggage you will carry. Do not rely on an unconfirmed ride appearing at the end of a remote outing.
A simple car-free Denver stay
For a visit centered on Denver, you can arrange airport transportation, use the city as your base and reserve one full day for a guided mountain outing. If your chosen tour meets near Union Station, plan the short journey from your accommodation to that meeting point separately.
Keep an independent Denver day between bigger excursions if you prefer a slower trip. That gives you time for downtown, a museum or a meal without collecting a rental car simply for a single mountain day. Our two-day tour pairing guide can help you choose outings with different scenery.
Choose independence or a coordinated day
Rail travel can be part of the experience when its route matches your destination and dates. A guided tour works well when you want multiple scenic stops within one coordinated day. Compare the actual Denver tour itineraries, then choose the journey that gets you to the Colorado experience you had in mind.
