Denver Airport to Downtown: Train, Private Transfer or Rental Car?

You have collected the bags and are ready to reach Denver. The useful question is where the journey ends: beside Union Station, at a hotel across downtown or at a mountain property several hours beyond the city. The same airport arrival can call for very different transportation.
This guide focuses on the airport-to-downtown decision. If your destination is Vail, Breckenridge or Aspen, compare a dedicated mountain transfer separately rather than assuming a downtown option will cover the whole journey.
Choose by destination, luggage and plans
Staying near Union Station and comfortable handling your own bags? Compare the A Line first. Want to arrive directly at your hotel with your group together? Compare a reserved private transfer with a suitable rideshare or taxi. Planning several independent outings? Price a rental car, including parking and other charges, for the days you will actually use it.
The A Line: useful when Union Station fits your trip
RTD’s A Line connects Denver Airport Station with Union Station. Trains have luggage storage, but passengers need to manage their own bags. Check RTD’s airport service page for current fares, schedules and service alerts.
Look up the hotel’s exact entrance before choosing rail. A short walk on a map may feel different with several suitcases, a stroller or bad weather. Add the final connection from Union Station to your comparison, especially when the whole party would need another vehicle.
Private transfers, rideshares and taxis
A reserved transfer lets you agree on the trip before you travel. When requesting a quote, give the provider your flight number, arrival date, destination, passenger count and luggage details. Ask what the price includes, how delays are handled and where you will meet the driver. Do not assume that every service includes an inside-terminal meet-and-greet.

Two adults staying close to Union Station with manageable luggage can compare the A Line first. A family with several large bags should compare the total train-and-hotel-connection cost with a suitable direct vehicle. A group continuing to Aspen should arrange the complete mountain journey before selecting an airport-to-downtown ride.
The right answer can also change during your stay. You may use a direct transfer on arrival, walk and use transit in Denver, then join a guided mountain tour. Renting a car for every day is only one way to build the trip.
Rental cars: compare the whole cost
A rental car makes sense when you want control over several outings, but it is not automatically the simplest choice for a city stay. Factor in hotel parking, fuel, tolls, rental terms and the time required to collect and return the vehicle.
DEN’s rental agencies are on airport property but require a shuttle from Jeppesen Terminal. They are not a walk-up collection point beside baggage claim. Use the airport’s rental car guidance for current directions.
Keep arrival day separate from a tight tour schedule
A flight’s scheduled landing time is not the time you will be ready at a downtown meeting point. Leave room for taxiing, walking through the airport, baggage collection, any arrival formalities and the transfer itself.
